Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Snake Skin Coatings

Find answers about application, durability, curing, compatibility, washing, removal, and common issues. If you are looking for installation instructions check our how-to section here.

Pre-Installation:

What surfaces can I apply Snake Skin to?

Snake Skin Spray Cans are mainly intended for wheels, badges, emblems, and selected exterior trim pieces that are clean, dry, and properly prepared before application. Results may vary on damaged, contaminated, freshly painted, or poorly prepared surfaces.

Can I use Snake Skin on wheels, badges, and trim?

Yes. Snake Skin is designed to protect and color change wheels, badges, emblems, and trim chrome delete applications. Proper cleaning, masking, and enough material build are important for good finish quality and easier removal later.

How long will Snake Skin last?

When properly applied and maintained, Snake Skin coatings are designed to last for years. Durability depends on surface preparation, spray technique, number of coats, driving conditions, climate, and aftercare. Higher-wear areas such as wheels and trim may show wear sooner than more protected areas.

Will Snake Skin damage my original paint?

Snake Skin is a Paint Protection Coating designed to be peelable and removable, but if the surface below it is porous or damaged it might not be compatible. A test spot is strongly recommended before full application, especially on repainted, repaired, delicate, unknown, or aged surfaces.

Installation:

Do I need to prep the surface before spraying?

Yes. Surface preparation is critical for the best duration of the film. The sprayed area should be clean, dry and free from dirt, grease, wax, and other contamination before spraying. Poor preparation is one of the main causes of lifting, tearing, and reduced durability.

How many coats should I apply?

As a general rule, apply enough material to build a strong, removable film. Snake Skin typically recommends a minimum of 4 wet coats, with more material often improving durability and peelability depending on the product, color, and surface.

How long does Snake Skin take to dry?

Snake Skin may become dry to the touch relatively quickly after application, but drying time depends on temperature, humidity, film thickness, and airflow. Always allow at least 15min between coats and 24h before handling the surface.

How long does Snake Skin take to fully cure?

Dry to the touch is not the same as fully cured. Snake Skin should be given additional time after application so the coating can settle and strengthen properly general rule is 24h. Avoid early washing, heavy rubbing, or harsh exposure before full cure.

Can I drive the car right after applying it?

It is best to wait until the coating is sufficiently dry before driving, couple of hours or when it matts out. Early exposure to road dirt, rain, rubbing, or high-speed airflow can affect the finish, especially around edges and thin areas.

Can I apply Snake Skin on newly painted parts?

No newly painted or recently repaired surface should be coated unless it is fully cured according to the paint manufacturer or body shop guidance. A test area is always recommended before full application or removal.

Can I spray Snake Skin over chrome?

Yes, Snake Skin can be used for chrome delete style applications on suitable badges and trim. However, smooth chrome surfaces still require correct preparation and technique for best adhesion and durability.

Can I apply Snake Skin in cold weather?

Cold weather can negatively affect spray pattern, leveling, drying, and overall finish quality. For best results, apply Snake Skin only within the recommended temperature range for the product (above 15C and below 60% humidity), avoid spraying in very cold, damp, or unstable conditions.

What should I do if I make a mistake during application?

Stop and allow the coating to settle before trying to correct it. Depending on the problem, you may be able to recoat, tidy the area, or remove and restart once the material is ready. Avoid overworking the surface while it is still wet.

Post-Installation:

Can I wash the car after applying Snake Skin?

Yes, but not immediately. The coating should be given proper time to dry and cure before washing. Hand washing is generally the safest option, especially during the early period after installation.

Can I use a pressure washer on Snake Skin?

Pressure washing can shorten the life of the coating if used aggressively, especially around edges, thin areas, badges, and trim. If pressure washing is used, keep a safe distance and avoid blasting edges directly.

How do I remove Snake Skin coating?

Snake Skin is designed to peel away when enough material has been applied. Removal is usually easiest when the coating was sprayed with sufficient thickness, allowing it to lift and peel in larger sections rather than small pieces.

Why is my coating peeling unevenly or tearing?

This is commonly caused by too little material, poor surface preparation, contamination, complex edges, or early abuse before the coating has had enough time to settle. Thin applications are more likely to tear during removal.
